The topic of the workshop

Today, the countryside on the fringes of metropolitan areas may represent a territorial resource ideal for living closer to nature, while remaining connected to the metropolitan areas with their assets. However, although diversified, such a territorial resource features tough challenges related to urban sprawl: longer distances and transport time, fragmentation, artificialization of land, poor quality of urban development, etc.

Fringe metropolitan areas face development challenges on two scales: the metropolitan scale, known as “enforced metropolization”; the territorial scale, with its own specific development dynamic.

How can the development of these territories be planned in such a way as to turn them into sustainable alternative living spaces in the heart of an agglomeration?
How is it possible to capitalise on the relationship between urban countrysides and metropolitan areas including the history of such places?
