During the restitution of the ‘Shaping Greater Tamale: Towards a planned and resilient metropolis’, the 3 multidisciplinary teams presented highly complementary proposals, tackling urban planning through the lenses of water, waste, and economic development. From Nyohini, a neighborhood used as the focus area for its urban environmental challenges and its ability to reflect broader challenges associated with land management and urban expansion in Greater Tamale, the three teams then scaled up their proposals to work at the Greater Tamale Metropolitan Area scale.

TEAM A - Kom
The team proposes to see water as a strong identity marker that conveys a sense of belonging and of ‘environmental consciouness’ to its communities. Team Kom makes a case to transform Greater Tamale into a “Water Sensitive City” where water scarcity challenges are addressed with urban planning strategies and nature-bases solutions such as water harvesting techniques or constructed wetlands to unlock water potentials to secure a sustainable water future for Greater Tamale.

TEAM B - The Mosaic City
Team B proposal aims at making a stance in regards to the waste crisis in Greater Tamale area which represents a major environmental challenge to the urban population. Mosaic City proposes to view waste as an opportunity for benefit by transforming solid waste into valuable resources for green buildings, compost for urban agriculture, and other innovative products aimed at boosting the local economy through green jobs. With its multi-scalar approach, the “Green Building System” offers a network that can be scaled up from the neighborhood scale to across the entire Greater Tamale area.

TEAM C - Next Level Tamale
Team C offers a renewed approach to local economic development by tackling the growth obstacles. Northern Ghana is rich in local resources (shea, soya beans, peanuts, rice etc.) which needs to be transformed as key to drive a sustainable, social and economic developement. Team C calls for a spatial organization with 3 complementary industrials hubs for Greater Tamale that foster complete value chains and grow collaborative ecosystems where entrepreneurship is encouraged and economic opportunities accessible.
