Prepare your application for the International urban workshop in Northern Ghana

Shaping Greater Tamale: towards a planned and resilient metropolis 29 June - 9 July 2026

Les Ateliers de Cergy, in partnership with Expertise France, the European Union and local stakeholders, are organizing an international urban planning workshop in Tamale, Ghana.

The complete call for applications will be out in a few days. Take note of the dates of the dates and prepare your application!

Greater Tamale is northern Ghana's sole metropolis and a 15th-century trans-Saharan trade junction. Predominantly Dagomba, the city's social fabric is shaped by the Dagbon kingdom's structures. The metropolis gathers Tamale municipality, and Sagnarigu, carved out as aseparate municipality in 2012. Tamale is a fast-growing city which plays a strategic role inregional governance and trade within thishistorically less urbanized area. Capital town of the Northern Region, the metropolitan area expanded 2.5 times in 15 years and its population has doubled, reaching 810,000 inhabitants making it the third largest urban center in Ghana. The city growth’s generates urban heat island effects, flash flooding in undrained low-lying zones, groundwater stress from unregulated boreholes, and a solid waste deficit challenge. Coordinating two separate assemblies over a fragmented, rapidly sprawling territory is the defining urban challenge.

To understand the complexity of land use, the workshop proposes to analyze Tamale through intertwined lenses: governance and planning, economies, and ecological systems. Within the Sustainable Cities project, the workshop aims to be a catalyst for translating territorial insights into future planning and pilot actions.

“How can Greater Tamale grow as a unique territory where everyday life, ecological systems, and productive activities coexist?”

The international urban workshop will bring together 15 selected professionals from Ghana and from across the world, all volunteers, to work in teams toengage in a collective and creative process to produce proposals of various scales for Greater Tamale. The international urban workshop will shape a shared vision, practical tools, and actionable solution for Greater Tamale’s sustainable urban future. These proposals will generate concrete spatial visions and planning recommendations that can be directly integrated into the urban planning process and documents currently under development for the Greater Tamale area.
